Maia (and Alex) Shibutani won the ice dancing title at the 2011 ISU Grand Prix NHK Trophy in Sapporo.

Sapporo also hosted the 1972 Winter Olympic Games. Melissa and Mark Militano placed seventh in pairs and Suna Murray placed twelfth in the ladies’ event.
