1959 US Figure Skating Championships
Then-Olympic silver medalist and 3-time World champion Carol Heiss won her third consecutive US Senior Ladies’ Figure Skating title in Rochester, NY. Her younger sister Nancy Heiss had to settle for silver. Just days short of his tenth birthday, future Olympic bronze medalist Scott Allen won novice men’s silver.
1957 North American Figure Skating Championships
Rochester hosted the biennial North Atlantic Figure Skating Championships in 1957.
Carol Heiss earned her first of two North American titles there, improving on her silver medal at the 1955 North American Figure Skating Championships in Regina, Saskatchewan.
1956 and 1979 Eastern Sectional Figure Skating Championships
SCNY member Allen Schramm won the senior men’s title at Easterns during the 1978-79 season. Fellow SCNY member Simone Grigorescu won senior ladies’ silver. 13-year-old sensation Elaine Zayak won junior ladies’ gold. Later that season, she won both the US and World Figure Skating Junior Ladies’ titles.
Rochester also hosted Eastern Sectionals during the 1955-56 season. SCNY members Carol Wanek and Karen Hepp won senior ladies’ gold and bronze, respectively. Carol Heiss’ younger brother Bruce Heiss won junior men’s gold and SCNY teammate Carl Olsson (and Bridget O’Rourke) won junior pairs. 6-year-old Scott Allen won juvenile boys’ bronze.
