1999 Eastern Sectional Figure Skating Championships

Johnny Weir began skating at the late age of twelve, winning the US juvenile boys’ pewter medal that same season and the US novice men’s bronze medal one season later(1997-98). During the 1998-99 season, he skated at the junior level and won Eastern Sectionals in Oldsmar, Florida. He was 14.

Weir later won three US senior men’s titles (2004-06), four of the six major Grand Prix events (France, Russia, NHK and China), the world junior men’s title (2001), bronze at the 2008 World Figure Skating Championships, and bronze at the 2009 and 2010 Grand Prix Final.

Also competing in Oldsmar, Florida at the 1999 Eastern Sectional Figure Skating Championships were Stephanie Roth, who won junior ladies’ pewter, Joanna Glick. who won novice ladies’ silver, and Zachary Grenier, who won novice men’s silver. Men’s Masters’ competitors Robert Nelson and John-Patrick Hull won gold and silver, respectively. Hull won silver that year at Nationals.
